The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced that a groundbreaking ceremony will take place Thursday, Aug. 14, at 11 a.m. on the location of where center ice will be located in the new arena.
This is exciting news, considering the New Arena Cam has been showing a pile of dirt and pickup trucks for weeks now. The new arena is slated to open for the start of the 2010-11 season.
In other news, The Hockey News‘ Rory Boylen predicted the three surprise teams for 2008-09. They are the Florida Panthers, Ottawa Senators and Columbus Blue Jackets.
I agree with Ottawa and Columbus. The Senators are still dangerous offensively and saw better goaltending from Martin Gerber. With everyone talking about how they are done for, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them succeed. As for Columbus, I hope they clinch a playoff spot. Blue Jacket fans are dying for a winner and have suffered through enough.
However, I don’t see Florida having a chance at being successful. They have lost so much, and are relying on too many possible circumstances to go just right. You’ll see what I mean tomorrow when I reveal my Southeast Division standings.
Finally, Richard Zednik is on the fast-track to recovery and is on schedule to be ready to go when training camp starts for the Florida Panthers (On Frozen Pond). After such a horrific injury, I’m glad to read that he is doing well. Everyone else should be too.
Thanks to Kuklas Korner.
