Bye bye to Scuds and the USS

The Penguins have bee super quiet so far in free agency.  The biggest news has been the departure of two defensemen: Rob Scuderi and Hal Gill.

Defensive partners during the playoffs, the pairing will sorely be missed.  Scuderi did the little things that led to spectacular plays.  Gill was sometimes frustrating to watch, yet seemed to always do the right thing in the end.

Scuderi is now a Los Angeles King.  He was signed on 7/2 to a four-year, $13.6-million contract.  He will average $3.4 a year, much more than the Pens would/could have offered.

As for Gill, he’s back in Canada — this time in Montreal.  He signed a two-year deal worth $4.5 million on 7/1.

Most likely, you’ll not hear much about either guy next season.  Neither do the things that garner much attention.  That is, until it happens in a big-time, pressure situation.

For Scuds, he became a fan favorite for the work that sometimes goes unnoticed.  Pittsburgh fans love to see a guy muck it up, sacrifice his body and lay it all on the line.

That’s what he did every night.  He went from a frustrating young player to possibly the most reliable defenseman on the team.

Scuds can’t really be replaced and will be missed.

Hal Gill will be missed as well.  He came in to Pittsburgh as a known name.  His towering size was something the Penguins didn’t have and he stepped in and gave the team much-needed help.

Many fans were frustrated at times with his lack of speed or his puck-handling skills.  However, he was about as shut down as a d-man could be in the recent Stanley Cup run.

He leaves and the Pens lose a dominant force.

Their stats as Penguins …
