So it’s summer time, which means little to no hockey news other than free agency, rookie camp and training camp.
We’re not just Penguins fans here, though they take full priority over everything else. Many of you are the same way, so this summer we’ll be posting other Pittsburgh sports news to keep things fresh and give our readers something to look at.
This post will be a work-in-progress. As Pitt football signs more players for the recruiting class of 2010, we’ll post it here along with a short bio of each player. We’ll also include our opinions on each player.
The list is up to 11 now. The newest recruit is another wide receiver. His name is Andrew Carswell and he is from Sto-Rox High School in McKees Rocks, PA.
Carswell, along with an earlier commitment from Salath Williams, combine for two tall wide receivers to add to an alreay sizable group for the Panthers. Jonathan Baldwin is the tallest on the team at 6-5, 220 pounds. He was followed by Oderick Turner at 6-3, 205 lbs. until this latest signing.
Carswell comes in at 6-4, 205 pounds. That’s outstanding size for a receiver coming out of high school. He needs to work on his speed a bit, but definitely has a chance to see playing time for Pitt as a freshman in my opinion.
Pitt is doing a very good job so far of landing talented offensive players. However, there is still one glaring hole in their recruiting plan: quarterback.
The Panthers have yet to sign a QB and, without an established running back like LeSean McCoy, it appears Pitt is going to have trouble gaining respect for the running game.
That, in turn, will give added pressure to whoever is behind center.
It’s still early. According to Scout.com, Pitt is ranked No. 18 in the nation so far for the recruiting class of 2010. That places the Panthers in first in the Big East, five spots ahead of No. 23 West Virginia.
Pitt has signed a total of 4-star recruits — tops in the conference. No school has landed a 5-star recruit yet.
Now if Pitt can just find a quarterback to throw all these guys a decent ball, they’ll be set.
